PETALING JAYA: Three Malaysian men’s doubles pairs progressed to the second round of the Australia Open in Sydney today, after defeating their respective Taiwanese opponents.
World No 4 duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani dominated He Zhi Wei-Huang Jui Hsuan 21-10, 21-10 in just 24 minutes. The duo had narrowly missed out on a World Tour Finals (WTF) spot after failing to reach the Kumamoto Masters final in Japan last week.
World No 5 pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who have already qualified for the WTF, won their opener against Chiang Chien Wei-Wu Hsuan Yi 23-21, 21-16.
Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri pulled off an upset by defeating Taiwan&#8217;s world No 12 duo Yang Po Hsuan-Lee Jhe Huei in straight games of 21-10, 21-13 in just 26 minutes.
Meanwhile, Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong were knocked out 21-19, 13-21, 22-20 in a hard-fought opener against Denmark’s Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer after nearly an hour on court.
Another pair, Lau Yi Sheng-Lim Tze Jien, were outplayed by their Indonesian rivals Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri 21-15, 21-10.
Macau Open champions Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King will play their first-round match against Australian pair Landon Kurniawan-Phillip Halim tomorrow.
In the mixed doubles category, world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei will play their opener against compatriots Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien tomorrow, while Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin will take on unheralded Australian pair Andika Ramadiansyah-Shimuzu Nozomi.
In the women’s singles, K Letshanaa will clash with Thai singles ace Supaniada Katethong, who has beaten her in two previous encounters.
Malaysia will have no representatives in men’s singles or women’s doubles, as Kumamoto Masters champions Pearly Tan-M Thinaah withdrew to focus on the World Tour Finals from Dec 17 to Dec 21 in Hangzhou, China.
