PETALING JAYA: The Penang road transport department (JPJ) has seized 38 luxury vehicles of various brands, mostly belonging to prominent individuals, since June.
The vehicles, worth more than RM10 million, were seized during Ops Luxury after they were found not to have valid road tax and insurance, reported Berita Harian.
State JPJ director Zulkifli Ismail said the luxury vehicles seized in the operation included a Rolls Royce, two Mercedes-Benzes, two Porsches, three Audis, three Mini Coopers, two Volkswagens, 11 BMWs, 13 Toyotas (including the Alphard and Vellfire models), and a Great Wall Motor vehicle.
Zulkifli said the government had lost out on more than RM77,400 in revenue as a result of the unpaid road tax on these vehicles.
“When asked why they had not renewed their road tax and insurance, most gave the excuse that they had forgotten.
“This is completely unacceptable, especially as some owners did not renew their vehicle&#8217;s road tax for two years,” he said at a press conference at the state JPJ headquarters in Seberang Jaya today.
“Many of these luxury vehicles were also found to be registered under companies but were being used by company owners, their family members and employees.
“In addition, some of the drivers of these luxury vehicles were also found to be without valid driving licences.&#8221;
Zulkifli said the Rolls Royce had the highest annual road tax of about RM54,000 a year.
