PETALING JAYA: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil says he does not believe artificial intelligence can replace journalists.
Speaking at a dinner held in conjunction with National Journalists’ Day (Hawana) 2025 today, Fahmi urged media organisations and practitioners to understand the capabilities and limitations of AI to ensure they are able to use the technology optimally in their work.
“We need to understand how to use AI,” Bernama reported him as saying.
“I don’t believe that AI can replace journalists at this point, but journalists must learn how AI can assist in their work.”
He suggested that training on AI and other skills be conducted for media practitioners.
Fahmi also reminded journalists to prioritise their health, noting that many often skipped medical check-ups because of their demanding work schedules.
He stressed the need for greater public appreciation of the media’s role, describing journalists as essential in providing verified news and information despite numerous challenges.
This year’s Hawana, themed “Journalism in the new era: embracing AI, safeguarding ethics”, runs for three days and will be officiated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
