PETALING JAYA: World mixed doubles champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have captured the Super 500 Australian Open title, marking their second major crown this year.
The world No 4 Malaysians were in fine form, defeating the 11th-ranked Indonesian duo of Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Pasaribu 21-16, 21-11 in a 41-minute match at the Sydney Olympic Park today.
With this victory, the duo ended Malaysia’s 23-year title drought in the mixed doubles category of the 36-year-old championships.
Ng Kean Kok-Chor Hooi Yee were the last Malaysian pair to win the title 22 years ago.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei take home US$37,525 (RM155,190) as champions.
They have now beaten Jafar-Felisha in all their five encounters so far.
In August, the duo created history by becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to win the World Championships title.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will now be touted as serious title contenders at the BWF World Tour Finals to be played in Hangzhou, China, from Dec 17 to 21 after winning two titles following their appearances in three finals and 10 semi-finals this year.
In the RM12.5 million World Tour Finals, only the top eight performers based on this year’s tournament results qualify, with one country limited to two representatives in each of the categories.
Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai will join Tang Jie-Ee Wei in the mixed doubles category.
The other Malaysians taking part are men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M Thinaah.
No Malaysian has ever won a title at the prestigious World Tour Finals since its inception in 2018.
