PETALING JAYA: An anti-corruption rally will be held on June 28 in Kuala Lumpur, with the event&#8217;s organisers looking to press the government to deliver on long-promised institutional reforms.
The protest, led by Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah under the banner &#8220;Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah 2.0&#8221;, will begin at 2.30pm in front of the Sogo shopping complex, on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, and head toward Dataran Merdeka.
“This peaceful, non-partisan rally demands stronger action to clean up the political system,” said Abishek Prasad, strategic director of HARAM, a coalition member.
The rally follows a similar protest in January. Organisers say there has been no meaningful progress since they submitted a memorandum to the government in February.
Their key demands include:
<ul>
<li>Separating the Attorney-General&#8217;s Chambers (AGC) from the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office;</li>
<li>Granting full independence to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC);</li>
<li>Enacting a political funding law; and,</li>
<li>Resolving the case of Teoh Beng Hock, who died in MACC custody in July 2009.</li>
</ul>
The group said the rally is open to all Malaysians, regardless of political affiliation, and called for a strong public turnout to signal growing frustration over stalled reforms.
They also voiced support for a related rally in Sabah on June 21–22, encouraging students and locals there to push for government accountability.
Earlier this year, the group warned of more protests if reforms were delayed.
In February, the secretariat&#8217;s secretary Zaim Zulkifli delivered a memorandum to Sungai Petani MP Taufiq Johari, with 15 other government MPs present.
Zaim stressed the secretariat was not accusing the government of corruption but warned that inaction risked enabling such practices.
