Experts say the presence of all five original BRICS countries at the 47th Asean Summit is symbolically powerful, even if informal.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship has drawn praise from a former senior diplomat and an analyst for bringing all five founding BRICS nations onto the same stage at the 47th Asean Summit, a move seen as a rare display of Global South alignment.

Ilango Karuppannan, Malaysia’s former high commissioner to Singapore, said the presence of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made the gathering symbolically significant.

“Optics matters a lot. It looks like Asean and BRICS are somewhat sharing the stage here,” he told FMT.
