SHAH ALAM: A 32-year-old auxiliary policeman has been arrested for robbing a jewellery shop at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara, Selangor, on Saturday.
He has been remanded for seven days, until March 29.
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the suspect was not on duty at the time of the robbery at around 5pm.
The suspect, who was masked and hooded, entered the shop and pointed a pistol at employees.
Three workers and one customer were present when he grabbed seven trays of gold jewellery worth about RM2 million.
“The suspect acted alone and also robbed a customer inside the shop,” Hussein said at a press conference today.
He said the suspect cited financial problems for committing armed robbery.
“We found that he had debts of nearly RM20,000.”
Hussein said investigations revealed that the suspect used a pistol belonging to the auxiliary police unit at his workplace.
“He knew the password to access the firearm. Before the robbery, he took the pistol and used it to commit the crime. He then returned it to the office before heading home to change for his shift.”
However, before he could report for work, he was arrested by police.
Hussein said the suspect, who has been an auxiliary policeman for about eight years, was arrested near his home in Bukit Beruntung.
The stolen jewellery was found in his Proton Persona.
“His family resides in Kelantan. Police believe he may have planned to flee there but we were able to apprehend him before he could do so.”
