Court reference is for clarity, not a final answer, says MP

Judicial clarification lays the groundwork for talks, but lasting resolution needs commercial and political compromise beyond the courtroom.

PETALING JAYA: Petronas’s decision to seek judicial clarification of its regulatory position in Sarawak should be seen as a procedural step to enable meaningful negotiations, not a political attack on state rights, says Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim.

Hassan said criticism centred on who authorised the court action missed the point as to why the legal reference was necessary in the first place.

“The court can decide, but it cannot solve (the dispute). Its role here is to establish which legal framework applies so that negotiations can proceed on a stable footing.”
