PETALING JAYA: Tensions flared at Amanah’s national convention today when several delegates demanded that their motion on party elections be debated immediately.
Three delegates raised concerns over the party polls slated for next year, but convention speaker Azhar Abdul Shukur repeatedly told them to sit down.
According to the Malay Mail, Azhar later relented and allowed two delegates to present their proposals.
However, the session soon descended into disorder when one delegate shouted they wanted the motion on the elections to be debated, not merely presented.
A heated exchange followed, with one delegate urging that the elections be postponed beyond 2026, while another insisted they go ahead as planned.
The situation escalated when one delegate was escorted out by members of the party’s volunteer corps. However, he was then shoved by another delegate, prompting the volunteers to break up the scuffle.
Following the commotion, Azhar instructed the convention to proceed with other motions that had been approved for debate.
Yesterday, Amanah vice-president Hatta Ramli had announced that motions regarding the 2026 party elections would not be debated, saying the issue was premature and that the party’s constitution does not allow advance decisions on such matters.
Amanah is holding its two-day national convention at Kompleks Belia Dan Kebudayaan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.
