PETALING JAYA: It was a dream debut for Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani at the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, as they made history by being the first Malaysian men’s doubles pair to qualify for the final since its inception in 2018.
Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, ranked world No 7, clawed back from a huge deficit in the rubber game to defeat Indonesia’s world No 4 Muhammad Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto 17-21, 21-16, 27-25 in a pulsating match that lasted 81 minutes.
They showed true determination when they managed to catch up from 9-15 and then go on to take the lead at 19-18 in the decider.
And after that, they played some amazing badminton to save six match points from the Indonesians in the decider and go on to win 27-25 much to the delight of the Chinese fans who were rooting for the Malaysians.
Earlier this morning, national mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei created history when they became the first Malaysians to qualify for the final. They defeated compatriots Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai in straight games of 21-15, 21-12 in the semi-final.
Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin have had a great year, having won the BWF Japan, China and Arctic Open championships this year.
They will now vie for the prize money of US$210,000 (RM934,600) given out to the winners or US$100,000 (RM445,000) as runners-up in the final tomorrow.
A win tomorrow at the BWF season-ender will be a great achievement for the gritty Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin who had played some great badminton, clawing back from early setbacks to win matches in many other tournaments.
In the final, they will meet World No 3 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen who defeated Indonesian pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlev in the other semi-final.
Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin had lost to the Danes 18-21, 21-16, 14-21 in their opening group tie on Wednesday.
