Farhan Haziq Mohamed says the large annual budgets of city councils demand greater accountability.

PETALING JAYA: A Kajang municipal councillor has urged the government to expand the study on mayoral elections for Kuala Lumpur to other major cities, saying the current appointment system has led to weak accountability and public awareness of the mayor.

Farhan Haziq Mohamed, a former Petaling Jaya city councillor, said based on personal experience, residents often did not even know who their mayor or council president was.

He blamed this on the current system which sees mayors appointed by the state or federal governments, and sometimes replaced without residents’ knowledge.
