PETALING JAYA: Fifa president Gianni Infantino is expected to make an official visit to Malaysia in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit.
Bernama quoted a senior source at the Football Association of Malaysia as saying Infantino would, among other things, witness the signing ceremony of an Asean football development agreement.
Infantino is also scheduled to pay a visit to the National Training Centre in Putrajaya, which the source said would allow Fifa to assess the modern facilities developed to support Malaysian football.
He is expected to include a stop at the Football for Schools programme in Kelana Jaya, an initiative aimed at promoting football participation among students through educational and community approaches.
His last visit to Malaysia was in April 2019 when he led a delegation of football leaders to pay a courtesy call on former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Asean Summit is scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 26 to Oct 28, with the participation of top leaders from the 10 Asean member states as well as key dialogue partners, including the US, China, Japan and India.
Infantino&#8217;s visit to Malaysia comes in the wake of sanctions imposed by Fifa on FAM and seven naturalised players. It said FAM had submitted falsified documents to confirm the players’ eligibility before Malaysia’s 2027 Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10.
Last month, Fifa said FAM must pay a fine of 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.9 million), while each of the seven players have been fined 2,000 Swiss francs (RM11,000) in addition to a 12-month suspension.
FAM is appealing the decision and has since suspended its secretary-general, Noor Azman Rahman.
