PETALING JAYA: DAP has urged the government to form a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate allegations that certain Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officials were involved in manoeuvres to force company takeovers.
DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said this was one of three key decisions made by the party&#8217;s central executive committee (CEC) at its monthly meeting last night.
According to Loke, the DAP top leadership held that the government must handle these allegations effectively to defend MACC&#8217;s credibility.
&#8220;An RCI needs to be formed to conduct a holistic investigation of the allegations and recommend steps to curb abuse of power in MACC,&#8221; he said in a statement.
A Bloomberg report had alleged that certain MACC officers participated in corporate manoeuvres by providing intimidation &#8220;services&#8221; to force company takeovers.
The report alleged that a network of businessmen and MACC officers used raids and investigations to pressure executives into selling shares in targeted companies.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki rubbished the report and invited those with information on the matter to lodge police reports.
DAP to ensure accountability in AG, PP appointments
DAP&#8217;s CEC also backed the government&#8217;s decision to refer the bill to separate the powers of the attorney-general (AG) and public prosecutor (PP) to a parliamentary committee.
Loke said DAP was committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in the process of appointing the AG and PP.
Two DAP MPs are in the parliamentary committee scrutinising the bill: Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh and Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan.
The CEC also expressed disappointment over the Dewan Rakyat&#8217;s failure to pass the bill to limit the prime minister&#8217;s tenure to 10 years on Monday.
The government has since said that the bill will be retabled during the June parliamentary sitting.
