SEREMBAN: A deep love for animals inspired 31-year-old Muhammad Shafiq Nazaruddin to venture into the world of pet business with an establishment named &#8220;Kucing dan Kopi&#8221;, located in Rasah Prima here.
Speaking with Bernama, the engineering graduate said the business originally began as a cat hotel and grooming spa. But, as demand grew, he expanded the concept into a cosy, café-style space wherein both pets and owners can relax.
“The response to my cat hotel and grooming service was truly encouraging. But customers who came to drop off their cats for grooming had nowhere to wait and would just sit on the floor.
“That’s when we had the idea to create a café-style lounge area to provide a more comfortable experience,” said Shaqif, who has cared for over 100 cats of various breeds, including British Shorthairs, Persians, Maine Coons, Scottish Folds, Sphynxes and others.
Customers are welcome to interact and play with the cats at his café without any entry fee. They simply need to purchase at least one food or drink item, priced between RM3 and RM14, and they can stay for as long as they like.
Proceeds from the café help cover maintenance and care costs &#8211; including food and litter &#8211; for about 50 cats who live at the outlet. Excluding medications and vet fees, Shafiq spends about RM1,500 a month on his four-legged companions.
Apart from hotel and grooming services, the café is also a space where people can experience the joy of being around and bonding with cats, including rare breeds like the hairless Sphynx, which Shafiq had purchased from Belgium and Ukraine for RM7,000 each.

“Every ringgit spent by our customers is deeply appreciated, as it directly helps us sustain this business and ensures the welfare of the cats,” said Shafiq, who has invested nearly RM150,000 to obtain his cats since 2019.
The business, which opened in 2022, draws cat lovers from within Negeri Sembilan as well as those from other states. Its location close to the Seremban-Port Dickson-Kuala Lumpur toll plaza gives it a strategic edge that allows it to remain afloat despite economic uncertainties.
One regular customer, Dania Irdina Adnan, said she visits the café almost every weekend with her family and spends close to an hour playing with the cats.
The Form Two student shared her excitement at getting to interact with rare breeds. “My favourite is the Sphynx. It’s so unique and you can&#8217;t find it just anywhere. It&#8217;s very special.&#8221;
Another visitor, university student Siti Nurazmah Ismail, 20, said visiting the café helps her relieve stress and cope with missing her own cat, a British Shorthair, who is back home in Ipoh, Perak.
