GEORGE TOWN: Jalan Tun Sardon, the main road linking Balik Pulau and Relau on Penang island, will remain closed following the discovery of new landslides along the route.
State infrastructure, transport, and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said six landslides were recorded from early this morning until 12pm today. A technical team from the public works department (JKR) has been mobilised to the route for further investigation.
“Due to safety factors, the Jalan Tun Sardon P15, which was scheduled to reopen today at 6pm, will remain closed until further notice. All road users are advised to plan their journeys accordingly,” Zairil said in a statement.
He added that the cleanup of the main road that commenced yesterday has been temporarily paused due to continuous heavy rain.
Yesterday, FMT reported that the road was closed following seven landslides and incidents of trees being uprooted and boulders crashing down. Zairil was reported then as saying that the reopening of the road would depend on the weather.
The worst of the seven landslides took place near the Anjung Indah lookout point along Jalan Tun Sardon at about 5pm. The fire and rescue department said its team found that soil, boulders and collapsed trees had covered an area the size of a small classroom.
A video of the landslide showed a car narrowly missing the falling trees and earth. No vehicles were trapped or casualties reported.
