In trade talks with Washington, Malaysia says it is also prepared to discuss reducing the trade deficit, removing non-tariff barriers, and boosting technological safeguards.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has expressed its openness to exploring the possibility of a bilateral trade agreement with the US, as part of wider efforts to address trade tensions sparked by “reciprocal” tariffs by the Donald Trump administration.

This was one of the four key negotiation areas discussed during investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz’s meeting in Washington on Thursday with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US trade representative Jamieson Greer.

The other areas are reducing the US-Malaysia trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, and strengthening technological safeguards and security.
