PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is probing a Facebook post featuring a doctored image of a Malay daily and a headline claiming Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had admitted that the US reciprocal trade deal was flawed.
In a statement, MCMC said that the image, which featured the Utusan Malaysia logo, was not only false but could also confuse the public.
It said Utusan Malaysia had also denied publishing any article titled &#8220;Anwar akui banyak kesilapan perjanjian dengan US&#8221;.
The internet regulator said it recorded a suspect’s statement today at the Alor Gajah police station. It also seized the suspect’s handphone and SIM card.
&#8220;Sharing fake content can damage the newspaper’s credibility and lead to legal action,&#8221; it said.
It also advised the public to verify information before sharing it on social media, especially information featuring the logos of news outlets or resembling news reports.
