PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Indian People&#8217;s Party (MIPP) has unanimously resolved to nominate Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as its candidate for prime minister, party president P Punithan said.
Calling Muhyiddin a “leader accepted by all races”, he also said delegates at MIPP&#8217;s annual general assembly today moved to fully support him as chairman of Perikatan Nasional.
“Abah is our choice. We want Abah back to lead the country,” he said, using the former prime minister&#8217;s nickname.
“We want a caring, clean, and stable government. We want Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister candidate for PN,” he said in his closing speech at the assembly.
The endorsement was one of five motions approved by the party&#8217;s delegates.
In the motion tabled by party deputy preisdent S Subaramaniam, it highlighted Muhyiddin&#8217;s leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic, noting his focus on saving lives and stabilising the economy during a critical period.
&#8220;Malaysia needs a government led by a leader who is experienced, highly integrity-driven, and visionary in order to drive the country towards progress and ensure economic, social, and political stability,&#8221; it stated.
MIPP is the second PN component party to back Muhyiddin as prime minister, after Bersatu last month, while PAS said winning GE16 should come first.
In his speech, Punithan also pledged to fight for the rights of the next generation of Indians, vowing that the community will no longer be marginalised.
He said the community has long contributed to Malaysia&#8217;s development, but continues to face poverty, limited access to education, and low economic participation.
“Indians will not be silent anymore. We will not be played out,” he said.
“Enough is enough. The loyalty of the Indian community cannot be underestimated by political parties. We are not second-class citizens. We are proud, dignified, and equal Malaysians.&#8221;
Another motion approved unanimously pledged full support for Punithan as MIPP president, granting him and the deputy president authority to represent the party in election and government matters.
The others motions called for the strengthening of education and economic opportunities for the Indian community, and approving the relocation and renovation of the party&#8217;s headquarters.
