PETALING JAYA: Two Malaysian mixed doubles pairs advanced to the second round of the Korea Open today, while another fell at the first hurdle.
World No 8 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai got off to a flying start, taking just 33 minutes to defeat Indonesia&#8217;s Adam Maulana-Indah Cahya Sari Jamil 21-9, 22-20.
They will next face China’s Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying, a lower-ranked pair who have shown strong form this season.
Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien followed up with a confident performance, defeating Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng-Jheng Yu Chieh 21-12, 22-20 in 36 minutes in their first-ever encounter. They will take on home pair Lee Jong Min-Chae Yoo Jung next.
However, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin fell short against Thailand’s Oupthong Ruttanapak-Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat 23-21, 17-21, 19-21 in a 65-minute match.
World champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei withdrew from the tournament at the last minute as Ee Wei had sustained a back injury. BAM officials said her condition would be assessed before a decision is made on the next course of action.
Earlier, men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, along with women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, also pulled out for a break from their packed tournament schedule.
Malaysians will feature later today in the men’s and women’s singles as well as the men’s doubles events.
All women’s doubles pairs have already been eliminated from this World Tour Super 500 event.
