PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia said it did not have the means to keep tabs on whether national shuttlers were involved in betting or match-fixing.
The association’s acting president V Subramaniam said it could merely remind its players and staff to avoid such activities, the New Straits Times reported.
&#8220;From time to time, we conduct briefings for all our shuttlers and officers to stay away from illegal activities such as betting and match-fixing,&#8221; he was quoted as saying.
Subramaniam said such reminders were given “long before” the controversy involving former national men’s singles shuttler Liew Daren and Jerry Gan, a performance analyst with the National Sports Institute, came to light.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) suspended Daren from taking part in badminton-related activities for 12 months for betting violations and match-fixing.
Gan, on the other hand, was slapped with a three month suspension for betting on matches and failing to report Daren’s actions to the federation’s integrity unit.
A BWF independent hearing panel found that Daren, who had retired as a player in April 2023, had bet on a badminton tournament in 2018 as a “restricted participant”.
He was also found to have obstructed investigations by failing to provide complete information to the inquiry panel, which found his actions to be in violation of BWF’s judicial procedures.
Subramaniam admitted that it was “very difficult” to monitor the national badminton squad on their possible involvement in such illegal activities.
&#8220;We are not like the BWF. We don&#8217;t have the expertise or resources.”
