PETALING JAYA: Pearly Tan and M Thinaah made history by becoming the first Malaysian women’s doubles pair to win the Thailand Open title since its inception 41 years ago.
The world No 4 duo, playing in their second final of the season, defeated South Korea’s Jeong Na Eun and Lee Yeon Woo 21-16, 21-17 in 57 minutes. It was their second straight win over the recently reunited Korean pair.
The match was closely contested, with both sides engaging in long rallies.
The South Koreans, competing in only their second tournament of the year, pushed the Malaysians all the way before falling short.
Pearly-Thinaah earned US$37,525 (RM161,130) while Jeong and Lee took home US$18,050 (RM77,500).
The win comes at a crucial time as Pearly and Thinaah are considering whether to remain with the Badminton Association of Malaysia or turn professional.
It was the pair’s fourth career title, and their second at the World Tour Super 500 level.
Their other career titles are the Swiss Open (2021), the French Open (2022) and the Hong Kong Open (2024).
