KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas Suriname E&amp;P BV (PSEPBV), a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd, has signed production sharing contracts (PSCs) for Blocks 9 and 10 in the shallow offshore region of Suriname.
The national oil and gas company said the agreements were signed with Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname NV (Staatsolie), Paradise Oil Company NV (POC), and consortium partners Chevron Suriname Exploration Ltd (Chevron) and QatarEnergy International E&amp;P LLC (QatarEnergy).
“The PSCs were awarded as part of the Suriname Post Shallow Offshore 2 Bid Round 2024-2025, following the consortium&#8217;s successful bid,” it said in a statement today.
Petronas said that the PSCs marked a significant milestone in its continued expansion in the Suriname-Guyana Basin, which is recognised globally for its hydrocarbon potential.
It said Blocks 9 and 10 cover a combined area of about 5,456 sq km and are strategically located between proven deepwater discoveries and onshore producing fields.
Under the agreements, Petronas holds a 30% participating interest and serves as operator for Block 9, while Chevron and QatarEnergy each hold 20%, and POC 30%.
For Block 10, Petronas holds a 30% stake, Chevron is the operator with another 30%, QatarEnergy holds 30%, and POC 10%.
The signing ceremony in Paramaribo, Suriname, was attended by representatives from all participating companies, including PSEPBV country chair Danny Tan, Staatsolie managing director Annand Jagesar, Chevron’s frontier exploration director Andrew Deighan, QatarEnergy’s international upstream and exploration manager Ali Al-Mana, and POC director Rekha Bissumbhar.
“Petronas is focused on growing our presence in Suriname, and we thank Staatsolie and the government of the Republic of Suriname for their continued support,&#8221; said Petronas vice-president of exploration Faisal Bakar.
Building on Petronas&#8217;s recent success and growth aspirations in the country, he said that the company is preparing for upcoming exploration activities.
“The expansion into Blocks 9 and 10 reflects our confidence in Suriname’s offshore potential and our commitment to creating sustainable value for the nation and its people,” he added.
Petronas said the new PSCs also include provisions for local workforce participation and social investment, in line with Suriname’s national development goals.
“With the addition of Blocks 9 and 10, along with the recent signing of Block 66 in June 2025, Petronas now holds interests in eight offshore blocks in Suriname, strengthening its footprint in the country’s offshore exploration landscape and its position as a global energy player,” it added.
