PETALING JAYA: National men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani sealed a historic third title for Malaysia at the Indonesia Masters today.
They defeated Indonesia’s up-and-coming duo Raymond Indra-Nikolaus Joaquin 21-19, 21-13 in a match that lasted 36 minutes at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin, ranked world No 9, overcame a charged atmosphere and a vocal home crowd to clinch the title.
It was a sweep of all the doubles events in the championships, and the first time that Malaysia had won three titles at a single World Tour tournament.
Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei set the ball rolling earlier when they won their event, and the second title went to women&#8217;s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, who received a walkover from their Japanese opponents when one of them fell ill.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin received US$39,500 (RM158,256) in the World Tour Super 500 championships.
It was sweet revenge for the Malaysians who were beaten by the 26th ranked Indonesians in the semi-finals of the Australia Open last November in their first encounter.
Their performance was also a morale booster as they only qualified for two finals last year &#8211; winning the India Open in January, and becoming runners-up at the Japan Open in July.
In their two earlier tournaments this year, they were eliminated in the second round at both the Malaysia and India Opens.
