PETALING JAYA: National mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei failed to create history at the China Masters after falling to Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supisara Paewsamphran in the final today.
The world champions, who were hoping to win Malaysia’s first ever title at the China Masters, lost in straight games, 8-21, 17-21,  to the Thais, who have been playing together in the mixed-doubles category for less than a year.
The match lasted just 34 minutes at the Shenzhen Arena.
The fatigue of playing marathon three-game matches in their last three rounds was obvious as Tang Jie-Ee Wei failed to match the power and strength they displayed against China’s top pair in the semi-finals yesterday.
This is the Thai pair’s fourth win out of their five encounters with the Malaysians so far.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei made history on Aug 31 by becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to win a title at the World Championships.
With this win, Dechapol-Supissara became the first non-Chinese pair to lift the mixed doubles title at the China Masters in its 20-year history.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei won US$43,750 (RM183,336) as runners-up while the winners took home US$92,500 (RM387,624).
Despite their World Championships success, the Malaysians have yet to win any BWF World Tour title this year as the World Championships are not part of the series that culminates with the World Tour finals in December.
However, the pair, who “broke up” for two months earlier this year in what was said to be a cooling off period after some on-court differences before reuniting in July, have shown marked improvement by entering the finals of their last two top-level tournaments.
Their outstanding performance was in the semi-final yesterday when they defied all odds to shock China’s No 1 pair Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping in three games that lasted 79 minutes.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will next be competing in the Korea Open, starting on Tuesday, where they are seeded third. They open their campaign against a Macau pair and are expected to make it to the quarter-finals.
