PETALING JAYA: Home fans at the Malaysia Open badminton tournament were finally treated to a win after mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei became the first Malaysians to move on to the second round.
Fresh from their surprise final appearance at the Super 1000 series World Tour Finals in China last month, Tang Jie-Ee Wei were in devastating form, defeating Taiwan’s Wu Hsuan Yi-Yang Chu Yun 21-8, 21-9 in just 24 minutes.
However, the win for the Malaysian world No 5 pair at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil was expected as the Taiwanese are ranked world No 40.
In the men&#8217;s doubles, world No 14 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun beat Japan&#8217;s world No 19 Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura 21-12, 21-17 while world No 43 Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien went past Taiwan&#8217;s world No 62 Cheng Yu-Pei-Sun Yu-Hsing 21-11, 21-17 in the women&#8217;s doubles.
Earlier, national women&#8217;s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, top men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, men’s singles player Leong Jun Hao and mixed doubles pairs Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien suffered first-round defeats.
Other Malaysians still in the running are mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai and men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Junaidi Arif-Roy King Yap, who will see action tomorrow morning.
