PETALING JAYA: Malaysian mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei overcame the odds and the noisy home crowd to shock China’s world No 1 pair Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping and enter the China Masters final.
World No 3 pair Tang Jie-Ee Wei defeated the home favourites 22-24, 21-19, 21-17 in a 79-minute match played at the Shenzhen Arena.
They will meet Thailand’s rising stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supisara Paewsamphran, the world No 4 pair who have beaten the Malaysians thrice in their past four encounters.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei&#8217;s win today is only their third out of nine matches against Yan Zhe-Dong Ping.
Last month, they made history by becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to lift the World Championships crown and win the gold medal since the tournament&#8217;s inception in 1977.
They will make history again if they were to win in the final tomorrow, as no Malaysian has ever won a title at the China Masters.
Last year, another Malaysian mixed doubles pair, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin, reached the China Masters final but lost to Yan Zhe-Dong Ping in a marathon final that lasted 92 minutes.
