PETALING JAYA: Pontian police are investigating yet another blunder involving a flag in the district.
This time it involves the Johor flag displayed upside down at a mini-market in Pekan Nanas.
Pontian police chief Shofee Tayib said an initial investigation revealed that the flag was unintentionally displayed upside down and was not done to insult or disrespect the emblem, Sinar Harian reported.
“The person who put it up was careless and the owner of the premises ensured it was displayed properly,” he was quoted as saying.
He said, however, that police were investigating the matter under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 for improper use, and the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949, which regulates the display of national emblems.
The matter is also being probed under Section 14 of the Malaysian Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour likely to cause breach of peace.
The latest gaffe comes days after a private dental clinic in Pontian was ordered to close for 30 days by the local council after it was seen displaying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
A 33-second viral video had shown the national flag being flown upside down on the second floor of a three-storey shop building, next to the Johor flag, which was correctly displayed.
Last night, Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching called for a review of the municipal order to shut the clinic. She said it was excessive as the offence was unintentional, as the police had also determined so.
