PETALING JAYA: Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik reached a significant milestone in their badminton careers by winning the men&#8217;s doubles title at the Thailand Open today.
The reigning Asian champions did it in style by showcasing their tactical maturity to defeat Denmark&#8217;s surprise package William Kryger Boe-Christian Faust Kjaer 20-22, 21-17, 21-12 in an energy-sapping match that lasted 60 minutes.
This victory marks the first time world No 5 pair Aaron-Wooi Yik have won two titles in a year, following their earlier success at the Badminton Asia Championships held in Zhejiang, China, in March.
It was a day of double joy in Bangkok for Malaysia as Pearly Tan-M Thinaah had earlier lifted the women’s doubles title.
Aaron-Wooi Yik’s victory also ended Malaysia’s 16-year title drought in the men’s doubles event at the championship.
The last Malaysian winners were Chan Peng Soon and Lim Khim Wah in 2009.
Aaron-Wooi Yik earned US$37,525 (RM161,130), while the runners-up took home US$18,050 (RM77,500).
Boe-Kjaer, who are ranked No 75, made heads turn at the championship when they defeated three seeded pairs including Indonesians Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto and Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun en route to the final.
Their fairy-tale run at the championship here comes after having been knocked out in the first round of the last five tournaments they had played.
