PETALING JAYA: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has directed the community communications department (J-Kom) to look at proposals to overhaul the department.
This comes after an MP accused it of having fallen short in conveying the government’s messages to the public.
“I have directed J-Kom to look at appropriate proposals and ensure information reaches the community,” he said in Penampang, Sabah, today.
Fahmi said his ministry is always open to suggestions and proposals to improve the department’s delivery of information.
“We have overhauled the department before. Our fellow MPs may have their views on the matter, which we respect.”
Fahmi noted however that not all issues raised in the Dewan Rakyat come under his ministry’s purview and the other ministries have their respective corporate communications units to provide answers on issues.
Yesterday, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong called for a shake-up at J-Kom, saying many people were missing out on key policies because its online reach was limited.
He said the problem was clearly reflected in J-Kom&#8217;s own social media output, pointing to the director-general’s podcasts which he said received fewer than 50 views on YouTube.
Fahmi said these podcasts were published on various platforms and said their reach was not as bad as depicted by Khoo when looked at overall.
He said he nevertheless accepted Khoo&#8217;s suggestion with an open heart, adding that there were “several things that can be improved”.
