PETALING JAYA: National singles shuttler Justin Hoh stunned higher-ranked Chinese player Wang Zheng Xing to advance into the second round of the Korea Open today.
World No 37 Justin beat the 19th ranked Zheng Xing 21-6, 21-19 in 39 minutes after he overcame a 15-18 deficit in the second game to win the match.
This was their first encounter in an international tournament.
Justin is likely to meet world No 2 Anders Antonsen in the last-16 tomorrow as the Dane is expected to defeat home shuttler Yoo Tae Bin in the opening round.
Macau Open men’s doubles champions Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King endured a disappointing start when they were outplayed by South Korea’s Jin Yong-Na Sung Seung in straight games in their opening match.
The world No 20 Malaysian pair put up a lethargic performance, allowing the Koreans, ranked No 53, to cruise to a 21-18, 21-16 victory in 45 minutes.
Wan Arif and Roy King have suffered first-round exits in three consecutive tournaments since winning the Macau Open in July.
Malaysia’s challenge in the women’s singles also came to an early end, with Goh Jin Wei and K Letshanaa losing in straight games to their South Korean opponents.
With these defeats, Malaysia have only six representatives left in tomorrow’s second round matches.
The remaining players are Justin, the mixed doubles pairs of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien, and men’s doubles duo Choong Hin Jian-Haikal Nazri.
