KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man was sentenced to 10 months&#8217; imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of intending to insult the modesty of a woman by installing a hidden camera in a toilet of an apartment unit.
P Naagiran, 28, was also fined RM5,000 by the magistrates&#8217; court here after pleading guilty to recording and possessing hundreds of obscene images and videos on his mobile phone.
Magistrate Amira Abd Aziz ordered Naagiran to serve his prison term from today. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 12 months in jail.
Naagiran was charged with intent to insult the modesty of a woman by installing a hidden camera in a toilet of an apartment unit in Jalan San Peng, here, at 9.45pm, on April 24, 2022.
He was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of five years&#8217; imprisonment, a fine or both upon conviction.
He is also accused of possessing 108 obscene videos and 374 obscene images on his phone, which were subsequently viewed at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on April 26, 2022.
This charge was brought under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of three years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Ravindejit Kaur urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence, citing the seriousness of the offence in violating the victim’s privacy and compromising public safety.
Counsel S Balasubrameniam requested a lenient sentence, saying his client had to care for his elderly mother.
