PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has asked TikTok to explain how it monitors suspicious content following reports of syndicates recruiting drug mules through the platform.
This comes after a syndicate reportedly duped several individuals into attempting to <a href="https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2025/11/06/akps-foils-bid-to-smuggle-cannabis-worth-rm8-3mil-to-manchester" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smuggle drugs to Manchester</a> in the UK through job offers via TikTok.
&#8220;MCMC has asked for an official explanation from TikTok concerning its monitoring mechanism and internal enforcement for content or ads believed to be meant for criminal purposes,&#8221; the commission said in a statement.
&#8220;This includes false job offers that could potentially dupe TikTok users.&#8221;
It warned that any misuse of online platforms to recruit or cheat users for criminal purposes was a serious offence punishable under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The provision deals with the misuse of network facilities.
MCMC said Section 263(1) of the same law requires platform licence holders to take steps to ensure their services are not used for criminal purposes.
&#8220;We advise the public to exercise caution when it comes to job offers on social media, especially those that involve sending goods or baggage overseas.
&#8220;Drug syndicates often make such offers to trick unsuspecting victims into becoming drug mules,&#8221; it said.
MCMC said it will continue working closely with the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency and the customs department to curb transnational crime.
