SHAH ALAM: More than RM2 million has been raised by a campaign to save the Malayan tiger since its launch in 2021, said the acting environment minister, Johari Ghani.
He said the Football Association of Malaysia contributed about RM200,000 to the campaign through proceeds from football match ticket sales. The national football team is also named Harimau Malaya after the national animal.
The Malayan tiger is the smallest tiger subspecies in Southeast Asia and is listed as critically endangered and at extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
Johari&#8217;s announcement was made at the launch of national celebrations for global Tiger Day, held on July 29.
Also present were Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim and FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub.
Johari said the Cabinet had agreed in 2021 to implement extraordinary strategic actions for Malayan tiger conservation over a 10-year period from 2021 to 2030.
He said these actions encompassed three approaches: intensifying efforts to halt population decline, improving governance and implementation effectiveness in conservation, and strengthening initiatives to ensure the long-term survival of the Malayan tiger.
“Monitoring conducted by Perhilitan (the wildlife department) with support from non-governmental organisations has shown a rise in the Malayan tiger population,&#8221; he said in his speech, read by deputy minister Huang Tiong Sii.
Malaysia was working to secure accreditation for Taman Negara and Endau Rompin National Park as meeting tiger conservation standards, while Perhilitan was pursuing recognition of the Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve as an Asean heritage park.
