PETALING JAYA: Preparations are under way for a new direct ferry link from Aceh to Penang, Malaysia, according to the provincial governor, Muzakir Manaf.
“There are still some things we need to tidy up to make it more comfortable and suitable for use,” he said after inspecting the jetty and passenger terminal in Krueng Geukueh port on Friday, Bernama reported.
An official launch date has not been confirmed. Provincial officials had previously expected the service to begin in July or early August.
The ferry service would support exports of Aceh&#8217;s key commodities, including gayo arabica coffee, tuna, patchouli oil, cloves and betel nuts.
Taufik Rahmat Nasution, an official of the state-owned ferry company, said the company is upgrading facilities and coordinating operations to support the new route.
He said the existing jetty can accommodate vessels of up to 3,000 gross tonnage, with water depths ranging from 9m to 13m.
