SHAH ALAM: Selangor will impose a sustainability fee on tourists from Jan 1 to safeguard the state&#8217;s heritage and environment, the state legislative assembly was told today.
Local government and tourism committee chairman Ng Suee Lim said local authorities will implement the collection mechanism, with hotels acting only as facilitators.
“The fee will not be a burden on visitors and is set according to the type of accommodation: RM7 for five-star hotels, RM5 for four-star hotels, RM3 for three-star hotels, and RM2 for homestays or Airbnb,” he said while winding up the debate on the Supply Enactment Bill 2026 for his portfolio today.
Ng said the initiative aligns with other states and tourist destinations that have implemented sustainability fees, including Melaka, Penang, Pahang, Langkawi, Perak and Negeri Sembilan.
He said proceeds from the fee will be channelled into a dedicated fund managed by the state secretary and will be reinvested in the tourism industry for conservation efforts and infrastructure development.
Ng also unveiled the &#8220;Surprising Selangor&#8221; initiative as part of the Visit Selangor Year 2025, with the programme set to continue through 2026.
He said the state government expects RM15 billion in tourism revenue, aiming to boost overnight stays and encourage visitors to spend more during their stays.
“Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries and a key contributor to the state&#8217;s economy. That is why we must ensure every measure taken brings benefits to the people of Selangor,” he said.
