PETALING JAYA: Shamsul Iskandar Akin has resigned as the prime minister’s political secretary.
In a post on X, Shamsul said he was made to understand that there were attempts to use a controversy to attack him, which could result in the government’s image being tarnished.
“Hence, I have decided to protect myself from these attacks.
“And this morning, I sent in my resignation letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.”
Shamsul, who is also the Melaka PKR chief, thanked Anwar for entrusting him with the role of political secretary.
While Shamsul did not go into detail about the controversy, the resignation comes days after Anwar defended his decision not to dismiss him following the issuance of a letter of support for contractors involved in a hospital project.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said any action taken against Shamsul should be based on the gravity of the offence.
“Did it violate the law? Was the project approved based on his letter? No,” he was reported as saying in response to Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli’s statement that he should not merely reprimand, but sack Shamsul to show his commitment to fighting corruption.
Last week, Anwar was reported to have told the Dewan Rakyat that he had reprimanded Shamsul as government regulations did not permit the issuance of such support letters.
Anwar had said he could only remark “please review” even for letters addressed to him and contracts could be scrutinised but not given “automatic” support.
He had said this during Minister’s Question Time in response to Perikatan Nasional’s Pasir Mas MP, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who raised the issue of Anwar’s political secretary listing six contractors in a support letter for an unspecified hospital project.
Shamsul, a former PKR information chief, was appointed as Anwar’s political secretary in December 2022.
