PETALING JAYA: DAP MP Syahredzan Johan has criticised PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari for suggesting a secret ballot no-confidence vote against the prime minister.
Syahredzan said opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin had previously claimed that the filing of a no-confidence motion would depend on Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul’s decision on a separate motion against Anwar Ibrahim.
“Now, Fadhli is challenging the government to allow a secret ballot on a no-confidence vote against the prime minister?
“If the opposition doesn’t even table such a motion, how can the question of whether it should be a secret ballot arise?
“Table the motion first, stop with all this empty talk.
&#8220;The people have had enough,” Syahredzan said in a Facebook post.
He said it had been weeks since the opposition’s Turun Anwar rally where they claimed a no-confidence vote would be tabled soon.
“Yet, nothing has materialised, with excuse after excuse being put forward.”
Syahredzan, who is Bangi MP, said it was clear that Perikatan Nasional lacked the courage and the numbers, speaking up only to appease supporters who are fast losing faith in their leadership.
Earlier today, Fadhli suggested that the no-confidence motion be voted on by secret ballot so no one would know who voted for whom.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia, the Pasir Mas MP questioned the feasibility of bringing a no-confidence motion to Parliament, noting that government MPs were bound by a memorandum of understanding they signed with the administration.
He said if the government was really genuine in allowing such a motion, the vote should be held by secret ballot so the identities of those supporting it would remain unknown.
However, even Fadhli expressed doubt this would happen as the results could possibly force the government to fall.
Last week, Hamzah said the opposition’s decision to file a motion for a no-confidence vote would depend on the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s decision on a separate motion filed by Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan.
Takiyuddin, the opposition chief whip, had submitted a motion calling for Anwar to be referred to the Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee for allegedly misleading the House on the Batu Puteh issue.
The motion followed Anwar informing the Dewan Rakyat that the Cabinet had decided not to pursue legal action against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over his role in the Batu Puteh case due to his advanced age.
