PETALING JAYA: Umno will send a protest note to the leaders of parties in the unity government who are planning to welcome its members into their fold.
Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said tonight the protest note represents a “stern warning” to the other components in the unity government.
“If this matter (of the other parties accepting Umno members into their fold) is not dealt with, it will complicate the relationship among the components,” he said in a statement.
Last week, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz confirmed that his application to join PKR had been accepted two weeks earlier.
Bernama reported that Tengku Zafrul said he is now a member of PKR’s Ampang division.
The former member of the Umno Supreme Council had resigned from the party on May 30.
On the same day, Asyraf warned PKR against accepting Tengku Zafrul into the party, saying it was “very inappropriate” for any party in the unity government to do so.
It also led to calls for Barisan Nasional to review its partnership with Pakatan Harapan for the next general election if PKR accepted Tengku Zafrul as a member.
On June 2, however, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party was not losing sleep over Tengku Zafrul’s decision to quit and his intention to join PKR.
He said it was “better (that) he left if he couldn’t remain loyal”.
