PETALING JAYA: Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi has been appointed as DAP’s election director for the 16th general election (GE16) and the Johor state election.
Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching said Wong will be supported by state DAP secretary Chen Kah Eng, Johor DAP vice-chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, and Johor DAP committee member Liow Cai Tung, Bernama reported.
“I am confident that under Wong&#8217;s leadership, they will develop effective strategies and ensure we are fully prepared for the upcoming elections,” she was quoted as saying.
She made the announcement during Johor DAP&#8217;s annual convention at the Siang Hai Recreation Centre in Segamat today.
Wong currently serves as DAP&#8217;s assistant national publicity secretary and is also Teo&#8217;s deputy in Johor DAP.
GE16 must be held by Feb 17, 2028, while the next Johor election must be held by June 20, 2027.
Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook reaffirmed the party’s support for holding simultaneous federal and state elections, saying it would improve efficiency and reduce costs.
He noted that while the power to dissolve Parliament lies with the prime minister, DAP would provide input to help coordinate the dissolutions if required.
Loke said aligning elections could be timely as several states are nearing the end of their terms &#8211; Melaka in December 2026, Sarawak in February 2027, and Johor in April 2027 &#8211; creating a window for synchronisation if Parliament is dissolved early.
“Practically speaking, this approach can help save costs, particularly in terms of logistics in Sarawak, where separate elections would incur higher costs,” he said.
